What you need before you start
Requirements
- An Android phone running Android 7.0 or higher
- Active phone service
- A call box that dials your personal phone number
- Your unlock code (usually 9 — check your lease if unsure)
If your call box uses a gate code that visitors type directly into a keypad, this guide isn't for you — that's a different system. But if your gate calls your phone and you press a number to open it, read on.
Step-by-step setup
Find your call box's phone number
Your call box has its own phone number — it's the number that shows up on your phone when the gate calls you. Open your recent calls and look for an unfamiliar number that has called you from your building's area code. That's it.
If you can't find it in your call log, try these options:
- Ask your building manager for the call box phone number
- Check your lease — some include it in the building information section
- Have a friend stand at the gate and dial your unit while you watch your phone
Download Call Box Helper
Download Call Box Helper from Google Play. It's currently free during the beta period.
When you open the app for the first time, it will walk you through the setup process including asking you to set it as your default phone app. This is required — the app needs to be your default dialer to intercept and automatically answer incoming calls from your call box.
Add your call box number
In the app, navigate to Call Box Numbers and tap the + button to add a new number. Enter the call box phone number you found in Step 1 and give it a label like "Front Gate" or "Building Entrance."
You can add multiple numbers if your building has more than one call box — for example, a front gate and a parking garage entrance.
Set your unlock code
Enter your unlock code — the digit you normally press to open the gate. For most call box systems this is 9, but some buildings use a different number. Check your welcome letter, lease agreement, or building management if you're not sure.
Call Box Helper supports 1-4 digit codes as well as * and # characters, so it works with virtually any call box system configuration.
Test it
Have someone stand at your gate and dial your unit number on the call box. Your gate should open automatically within a few seconds — no action needed from you.
If you don't have someone to test with, you can also call your own phone from the call box number while standing at the gate. The app will answer and send the tone.
That's it. From this point forward, every delivery driver, guest, and visitor gets through your gate automatically — whether your phone is on silent, in Do Not Disturb, or your screen is off. You never have to think about it again.
Common questions
Will my regular calls still work normally?
Yes. Call Box Helper only auto-answers calls from numbers you specifically register. Every other call rings normally and you answer it yourself. Your contacts, call history, and all standard calling features work exactly as before.
What if my call box number changes?
Just add the new number in the app and remove the old one. Takes about 30 seconds.
Does it work if I have multiple call boxes?
Yes — you can add as many call box numbers as you need. Each one can have its own unlock code and timing settings.
What if I move apartments?
Just update your call box number and unlock code in the app. Everything else stays the same.
Do I need to do anything when a delivery is coming?
Nothing at all. Once it's set up, it runs automatically in the background. You don't need to open the app, enable anything, or even know a delivery is coming. The gate just opens.
What makes this different from other solutions
Most call box apps require you to get a virtual phone number and update your building directory — a process that requires landlord cooperation and can take days. Call Box Helper works with your existing phone number. There's nothing to coordinate with your building manager, no directory changes, and no waiting.
You download the app, add your call box number, and it works. That's the whole process.
Ready to set it up?
Takes about two minutes. Works on silent, Do Not Disturb, and while your screen is off. Free during beta — and beta testers get it free for life.
